Veronika Bernard's academic profile

Veronika Bernard (PhD) is an Associate Professor (Privatdozentin) with the Department of German language and literature at the University of Innsbruck/ Austria, a member of the research platform CenT (Cultural Encounters and Transfer) and of the reasearch focus KiK (Cultures in Contact). Veronika Bernard has received a traditional academic Humanities education on German and English language and literature. She soon concentrated on German literature; her research interests, however, mainly invited her to focus on fields which were then still considered the thematic margins of German literature, like 19th century travel writings.Veronika Bernard has earned her postdoctoral qualification (Habilitation) in German literature. Her doctoral thesis is on the Orient in 19th century Austrian travel writings. From 2007-2010 she was the director of the project Breaking the Stereotype. Oriental and Occidental Stereotypes in the Course of Time (http://www.breaking-the-stereotype2009-2010.over-blog.org/). Now she is the director of the IMAGES project (conferences, publications, exhibitions, online contests; http://www.images-1.over-blog.org/) together with Serhan Oksay; IMAGES is an interdisciplinary project on cultural encounters, poverty and migration planned to run from 2010 to 2014. Veronika Bernard is a member of the advisory board of CINEJ Cinema Journal, the international refereed online cinema journal published by the University of Pittsburgh (http://cinej.pitt.edu/). Her research in general focuses on the diversity of aspects of cultural and individual identity. Within this scope she is particularly interested in the interrelation between literature, films, the Arts and society over the centuries as is the case with cultural stereotypes for instance. Having done research on the political impact of poetry by writers of the Austrian Enlightenment, the view of the Orient in pieces of 19th century Austrian travel writings dealing with journeys to and within the Ottoman Empire, on the representation of cities in German fiction and poetry between the Middle Ages and present, on texts by writers of migrant background, and recently on cultural encounter in movies she has eventually turned to a cultural studies approach. For a selection of her articles see http://v-b-publikationen.over-blog.de/
